Brother HL-2140 B&W Laser Printer under Debian 9 only prints blank pages: a fix

Posted 07-04-2017 at 05:28 PM by flshope

I recently installed Debian 9.0 on my primary machine (Pogo2011). This installation is dual boot with Ubuntu 16.04 and each OS booting from a separate hard disk, each with its own Grub installation. The machine had Debian 8.8 previously. I decided to do the Debian 9 installation as a clean install (rather than as an upgrade) because the 8.8 was a bit messed up (let me not go into that here). The Debian 9 install was done from a netinst CD. It appeared to be a textbook-successful install. The post-install...

Rarely a website butchered its own interface so bad as Yahoo did to yahoogroups

You barely can search within a given group you're subscribed to -- better luck searching from google search with "site:groups.yahoo" and things like that.

Congratulations, yahoo, now hackers/defacers don't have anything to do there.

It's an old, massive transformation of a previously functional UI into a useless, unintuitive, clump of "featured bugs". I thought it would be fixed eventually, but it's just as bad as the first time they've ruined it....

Create your own Linux distro based on ExTiX 17.5/Ubuntu 17.04!

Posted 07-03-2017 at 04:22 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)

In ExTiX 17.5, Build 170508, with KDE 4.16.12 and KDE Frameworks I have included (pre-installed) Refracta Tools, which makes it possible for you to very easy and fast make your own Ubuntu 17.04 (or Ubuntu 17.10) distro.

Watch a slideshow showing how Refracta Snapshot works...

OpenRC+sysv fixes Debian's (my Debian's) shutdown/reboot problem

For some reason it was failing to unmount everything, and then simply halting indefinitely.

OpenRC/sysv seems to work fine, so far.

A console install is probably advised, if anyone is considering doing the same. After installing openrc, the install script will suggest a kind of pre-reboot line that will "manually" deactivate the services and then you should reboot. Which I did with sysreq, even though I probably shouldn't have.

I think they...

NFS-RAMBOOT - How-To for Debian 9 Stretch

Posted 06-30-2017 at 05:09 PM by IsaacKuo

NFS-RAMBOOT adapts my RAMBOOT hack to NFS root (PXE or not). On boot, it extracts an OS tarball from an nfs share into local RAM (recommended 3+GB of RAM). The result is like a very fast SSD.

Why do this? Compared to RAMBOOT, loading (and saving) the OS tarball over gigabit ethernet can be faster than a local hard drive or USB drive, if the file server has an SSD or a faster hard drive (compare 3.5" drives to 2.5" laptop drives, for example). Also, having the OS tarballs...
