SuSE Linux 7.1: Into the 21st Century in VirtualBox

Look it up - the 21st century technically didn't start until 2001 as there was no year 0 CE. So SuSE Linux 7.1, released January 24, 2001, was the first version of SuSE Linux released in the current century.

SuSE Linux 7.1, likely as a transitional measure, included both KDE 1.1.2 and KDE 2.0.1. KDE 2 was a significant rewrite of KDE as well as a significant change to its interface and overall look. KDE 2 makes a login sound but struggles to log out, and KDE 1 and GNOME can only be...

SuSE Linux 7.0: Decent Graphics in VirtualBox

SuSE Linux 7.0 was released September 27, 2000. It has a notable place in my experiment to run all fixed released versions of SuSE Linux in my experiment as it's the first to run with remotely decent graphics.

I was able to download a full version of the distribution from archive.org, and test both KDE 1 and an upgraded GNOME 1.2. Both GNOME and KDE look beautiful and feature complete for their times. To start GNOME or the KDE 2 preview, I had to select the Failsafe option in kdm, and...

SuSE Linux 6.4 in VirtualBox

SuSE Linux 6.4 was released March 9, 2000. Unfortunately, on archive.org the only ISO that works for this release is the Personal edition, which only includes KDE.

This was the first release to default to the ReiserFS file system instead of ext2, which meant a switch to a more advanced journaling filesystem that protects against data loss. ReiserFS had an unusually tragic fate, and is no longer in active development.

YaST2 is also first included on installed systems for...

SuSE Linux 6.3 in VirtualBox

At the close of the 1990s, when many were wondering about what Y2K would do to their machines, came SuSE Linux 6.3 on November 5, 1999.

KDE 1.1.2 doesn't seem to being with it particularly radical changes. I was however able to get GNOME to run with the Enlightenment window manager started later (Metacity and Mutter, which generally were the window managers for GNOME 2 and 3, were yet to exist). The experience seemed complete and stable, although the 4 bit color depth hampered the experience....

SuSE Linux 6.2 in VirtualBox

On August 12, 1999, SuSE Linux 6.2 found itself released.

KDE 1.1.1 seems to have brought more stable programs and a few more modules in the Control Center, although SuSE seems to have added extra buttons to the KDE panel. GNOME struggled similarly as it did in SuSE Linux 6.1 to run with a window manager. Netscape Communicator seems to have had some minor upgrades without many visible changes compared to the version included in SuSE Linux 6.0. It is at once both amusing and cringeworthy...
