Ubuntu has spyware enabled by default?

Posted 05-08-2014 at 05:14 AM by Peter T

@ k3?tO1

Do tell... about enabled spyware.

And what is the third element of your user handle ?

And from what I have read sofar, VitualBox with MS Word loaded
seems to be the only way users are able to 'bring over' doc's
formatted in Word to show up in Linux in a reasonable facsimile.

Enabled spyware REALLY ??? surely you jest.

I believe the 'spyware' is the Amazon search functionality that was enabled by default in Ubuntu 13.10. Anything you typed into the Dash's search bar was transmitted out over the Internet; search results from Amazon were returned. That no longer happens by default in 14.04. Here's a good article on the subject.

Yet hordes of Buntards still use the system. Go figure.

I simply turned the feature off when I upgraded to 13.10. Much easier than switching distros.

For those who do not care about dishonesty and manipulation, there is no problem as long as the system meets their needs. For those who have a philosophical opposition to such underhanded practices, however, it is a very big issue. More important than the small inconvenience of switching distros.
