Too hot to Golf, let alone be outside

Posted 07-18-2015 at 12:27 PM by onebuck

It's unbearable outside with temps in the 90s' and the humidity being real high, 80% plus. No relief in sight. So my work is being done inside. Nothing new for Illinois in July. Some corn is growing while some fields are rotting from all the rain.

Most of our local recreations are being hit hard. Golf is limited to walkers because of the wet conditions, old men like me who have health issue cannot walk the courses without potential problems. I walked once a few weeks ago and it almost killed me. Not again! Pools are losing because of the rain and then cooler days. Now that it is hot the pools are having a good turn out. These businesses will never recover the lost money from the weather that limited operational time.

Our local Golf course is in financial trouble and depends on our participation but when golfers that need to use carts then no one goes out. Heck, the excessive rain has caused damage(mold) to greens that is costly to repair. Reminds me of Florida golf, courses are closing because of maintenance cost and low public participation. More private clubs are opening to the public so they can increase revenues. Some really good courses have been closed and will never recover because of lost revenues. Hopefully we will get our College Golf outing done without another weather delay. I enjoy that outing with my friends and colleagues. That outing supports the college football program.

My poor yard is in need of maintenance but it has been to wet to use anything to kill the weed patches. I really do not like to mow through the weeds since that just spreads the seeds. Compounding the issue!
Clover & broad leaf everywhere that is just waiting to be killed! Creeping Charley has taken over the front yard. Needs to be killed but really hard to kill once you get it.

One must be a jack of all trades to maintain a home. Fortunately, I have experience from the farm but the weather must be agreeable in order to treat the lawn properly.

I have several contracted jobs that have not been completed because of the wet season. Some of jobs were started weeks ago but to much rain to complete. One concrete job (replacement of the curb and replace apron into the driveway by widening and change pitch) has been delayed because the contractor falls behind on his other jobs thus mine will be delayed. Sure it's only July but looks like jobs are delayed 6-8 weeks or longer delay so my job might be done in Sept/Oct and that can cause other issues for that period. I am very frustrated by the lack of getting contracted jobs done. At least on the farm I had the equipment to use to perform the necessary work but now I must rely on contractors. Really Sucks!

Really did not intend to write about these personal issues but felt good to get it out. Watching the 'Open' as I write. Those poor players attempting to work with poor conditions like 40+ winds. Balls oscillating on the greens. I can not imagine attempting to putt a ball that is in motion(spinning on the spot) or a ball that is moved by the wind when attempting to mark. No fun for anyone!

DJ has been able to hit low ball drives that can get him to the hole but if you cannot putt/mark the moving ball then the R&A should delay the play. Sure everyone has the same conditions but the conditions are too much!
Not a fair play.

Now getting a weather delay for the Open. Just blew the horn to stop play again. These conditions are not something the professionals are used too. Walking officials are getting abuse by critics which should be directed to tournament officials not the walking officials. The Open has been extended a few times in the past, so why not now. Spectators will return if the Open has a Monday finish. Hey, the R&A has delayed the finish and the cut will be for today's play. Loads of anxiety for the ones cut because of today's in-completion(s). Tough call for the R&A.
I wonder how the PGA is going to handle the PGA tour events this coming week because of the Open delay? Canadian Open is another potential problem for the intended participants. Someone will win the Open on Monday!

Heck, this is in Scotland! Noted for this type of weather in the summer.

Golf is a fun game but today at the Open it is not good at all.
