Posted 08-01-2007 at 04:09 PM by mowestusa

When you try something new, it sometimes means relearning what you have taken for granted. I decided to try Fedora 7 as my easy to use work desktop this week. I had been using Ubuntu with Ion3 as the window manager. Thanks to a recent stash of cast of computer parts, I discovered that I could put together out of odd parts a new desktop that had a 1.1ghz processor and 320megs of RAM. I decided that I should use this opportunity to learn something new. So after putting together my "new"...

NetBSD Force Feeds Learning Bash

Posted 05-02-2007 at 07:05 PM by mowestusa

Do you remember learning Algebra for the first time? All of the sudden you went from doing math where you had all of the numbers and symbols laid out in neat little formulas, to having x,y,a,b, and c in place of numbers. Before you could ever figure out what would be the answer to the equation you first had to figure out the equation itself.

In my computing life, I often have felt as if more would make me happier, more productive, and help me get things done faster. However, Linux and its powerful command line is helping me rethink my past ideas about using the computer. Today is the perfect example....

Plain Text & CLI Printing & SciTE

Posted 02-07-2007 at 11:11 AM by mowestusa

I'm going to cover a few different topics at once under this entry.

First, I have fallen in love with "plain text" as my default file format. I'm not a programer, but I am a writer. In fact, a large portion of my job does not involve computers at all. Although I could live without a computer, I use it as a tool to get all of the writing done which is demanded of me each day. "Plain Text" allows me to get the job done no matter what computer I use. "Plain Text"...
