What is "Segmentation Fault" ?

When I play "vlc" from command prompt in Mandriva 2009 Free, I mean

localhost$ vlc

I get a message that it cannot be played and there's some Segmentation Fault and that I should try "cvlc".
And it works with cvlc.

What is the difference in vlc and cvlc?
And what is meant by Segmentation Fault?
