Love Linux... NOT

The never ending config continues...

Tried to get surround sound going on Buntu 10.04. After about TEN hours I give up. It is so complicated with workings from here to Xmas and beyond. It really is a joke to keep it so messed up. I tried two sound cards.
Pulse is a complete mystery. If you install some pulse tools you have multiple entries in the menu all for the same peice, PulseAudio.
There's Alsa, Pulse and a host of other sound servers configs and things to keep your head messed up for months.

Windows has a simple dialog which shows "PICTURES" of the sound setup. A baby could do it. Really yes, a baby.
But with Linux (if it don't work the way YOU want, you
have to research for hours just how to find out that to really get sound configured "the way you want" you'll have to do some text file editing in the system. Fantastic. Linux needs GUIs for EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING! One should never have to go to command line or edit text files. From what I know, Guis are easy to make for someone that knows.
I am not going to learn how to make guis. I will keep complaining loudly.

I have sound. I can hear in stereo but that's all. No surround unless I work it out which I can't. I broke it a few times and got it going agian. That's all.
Linux shits me but windows is worse. What to do. Ahhhh a rope necktie will fix everything.
