Starting Again

I am a retired Software Engineer. I retired at age 57 five years ago in April of 2007. I've spent most of my time travelling or dancing. I don't intend to cover those topics in this Blog. But besides those things I've tried to keep involved in technology areas, especially software.

More recently I began building a website that I'd like to use as a learning platform for me and a teaching platform for others who would like to try out different things. The websites name is Software Clues. On it I have published just two projects, so far. One is a Linux command line demonstration of screen capture and the other is an Email project. The command line tool is nothing special but it illustrates the ease with which existing programs can be used to accomplish a difficult task. And while it is illustrating the command line programs, it runs under the gnome window manager.

The Email program is a different story. It is written entirely in Java. It uses the JavaMail (1.4.1) package from Sun/Oracle. I build a general purpose sender and receiver. I provided a test program for each of the utility programs. The long term goal is to add the email programs to my calendar and a security program that allows me to get pictures and video from my home server.

I'm also open to topics if there are things that other people think might be of general interest. I'm working on a LAN chat program for my internal network (four computers). I'm working on a music player that can be run from any of the computers in the house and activates the household amplifier and speakers.

While I earned a living in Software, I also do a bit of hardware. My music player project includes a micro controller that turns the stereo on and off by relays. So I hope to include a mix of things on my website and here on this Blog. But, of couse, all of the projects are done using a Linux platform.

That's all for now,
