Introduction to the World of Linux.

A lot of my work, I am a missionary on Taiwan, the Republic of China, is conducted on the computer. I write my lessons, sermons, and other material, in English and in Chinese. I use "Traditional," or sometimes called, "Complex", Chinese characters, written on a Chinese keyboard, in our work. So the ability to use Chinese is paramount in my selection of an OS.

In December 2015 my Windows 7 desktop OS crashed and after a long hard thought what to replace it with was a hard decision. I did not want Windows 8 and I was frustrated with the loss of control of my OS by Microsoft with its continual updating, cost of the system, malware, and the different software needed to operate it.

So, I heard about Linux from a fellow missionary friend and decided to try Linux. Before I installed Linux I was able to download (on another person's computer), the "Official User Guide Linux Mint 17.2." I still have the User Guide and I would recommend anyone who is interested in Linux to download the User Guide first and read through the Guide.

On December 19, 2015 I installed Linux Mint 17.3, Rosa, cinnamon desktop, OS. The installation went very well, and I started to learn how to use the Linux way of computing. I was able to install the Chinese character writing system from the "Software Manager."

All in all I was pleased with Linux and Linux 17.3. I had a large learning curve in the beginning, but, it exceeded my expectations. Linux was faster then Windows 7, no problem with malware, and I was able to do the work that needed to be done.

I would recommend the Linux, or Ubuntu, computer system to all.
