Distraction free writing?

Posted 12-03-2017 at 12:08 PM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

I really don't understand what these text editors that specialise in
'Distraction free writing' are all about. I use emacs and I just type
into a blank screen. I use vi/vim and similarly I just type into a
blank screen.

I don't get it... where's the distraction: M-x tetris?

Slackware wins LQ's Members Choice Award: Desktop Distro of the Year 2016

Posted 02-08-2017 at 05:14 AM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

My congratulations to Mr. Volkerding.

Slackware has always had a strong and loyal contingent here on LQ. We have Slackware users here who have been using it for decades and who wouldn't dream of using anything else -- which says a lot: either about it, or them, or both, and I'll let you decide for yourself on that one. -- so it's no surprise that Slackware did well in the vote: it always does.

What I find interesting though is that this year there was no stand-out...

The danger of '.desktop' files!

Posted 01-31-2017 at 01:36 PM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

There was an interesting post on r/linux today outlining some of the insanity relating to the use of .desktop files on linux desktops. The information is nothing new -- it's been like this for years and is also why you'll pry my window-manager+xterm working environment from my cold dead hands -- but it's one of the clearest examples of the dangers I've seen on the subject.

If you're unaware of this stuff, you shouldn't be. Go have a read:

Use the Shell, Luke.

One from the light-side:
Quote:
The Shell is what gives a grey-beard his power.
It's an interface to all installed tools.
It surrounds them, and penetrates them.
It binds the UNIXverse together.

You too must come to Slackware if you are to learn the ways
of the Shell and become a grey-beard like your father.
And one from the dark-side:

Do not be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed. The power to destroy a system
