What is a Linux User?

I just read an article over at entitled
"What is a Linux User?"

The author of that piece celebrates the fact that the majority of "linux users" no longer know, or even need to know, what they're doing.

Yes, it's great that those with little skill can now use free software, but without the ability to compile from source the main advantage of free and open software -- the ability to change it to suit your preferences...

The grass is never greener...

What goes around comes around, and today, for me, what has come around, again, is fvwm. After a progression from xfce, to dwm, to cwm, I'm now back using this venerable old work-horse of a window manager and wondering why in hell I ever left it behind in the first place.

So, tonight, like Prince, I'm gonna party like it's 1999! ; and just like Jethro Tull, I'm happy and I'm smiling... living in the past.

1994 is probably closer to it, but you get the idea....

"Don't click random links". It's advice you see posted from time to time, but the entire Web is a collection of random links. You never know what you're going to get with any of it, until you get it!

"Turn off javascript" is advice I understand, "Don't click random links" might as well be "Don't use the web".

Unfortunately, "Turn off Javascript" is rapidly becoming "Can't use the web" thanks to idiot web...

Linux Journal re-runs the Editor Wars.
Vim: 35%
GNU Emacs: 19%
So, probably no surprise there to anyone.

I think Emacs suffers because it has some bad initial behaviours and some awkward or hard to remember key strokes. These can mostly be fixed of course through customisation but it takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention learning a little elisp along the way!

Up until recently I was a 'vi' kind of guy, 'elvis'...

This entertaining and rightfully sarcastic presentation from fosdem 18 is a must see for anyone who has had to suffer through building other people's programs from source. It certainly resonated with me as a Slackware user.
