Sharing Files between MacOS and OpenSUSE

Posted 11-06-2010 at 10:10 PM by Focused4Success

I like to keep all of my unique data and configuration scripts for my VMs on the native file system vs. mixing them in with the OS. I keep my user files under /home/username on my Mac. I access these files by mounting this filesystem as /mnt/username under OpenSUSE using CIFS. I also use a shared NIC vs. a bridged NIC to maintain security. Files created should be created with the proper user and group so they remain accessible when created over the network and accessed on the host. Finally, the...

Setting up Aptana Studio

Posted 11-06-2010 at 02:07 PM by Focused4Success

Aptana Studio comes packaged in two different ways:
  • An standalone executable
  • An Eclipse plug-in

I tried the Eclipse plug-in because I plan to use Eclipse for C/C++ development. But I didn't like the way it worked as much as using Aptana Studio standalone. I also plan to run OpenSUSE in the background and access it using X-Windows from the Mac.

Setting up my Web Development Environment based on Aptana Studio

Posted 11-06-2010 at 01:14 PM by Focused4Success

I really like using Aptana Studio for web development. I started using Aptana in 2008 when I wrote a web application for the original iPhone. Later I used it at work when I converted the embedded web server in our product from a traditional architecture to and Ajax architecture. That's when I learned about jQuery.... very, very cool. Something to write about later.

The reason I need a Web Development Environment is because I'm designing a website for my wife's art work. First, I went...

Updated 11-07-2010 at 07:04 AM by Focused4Success (fixed error in php.ini)

The reason I started running OpenSUSE is to setup a development environment to build a LAMP based website. I installed OpenSUSE and setup Aptana Studio. Then I setup LAMP.

OpenSUSE has a pretty nice software installation manager. I wasn't aware of it until I read this article: SDB:Linux Apache MySQL PHP. It has a really nice description of how to install everything required to setup a PHP based Webserver with a MySQL backend. That what LAMP means: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.

Time Synchronization

Posted 11-06-2010 at 08:55 AM by Focused4Success
Updated 11-06-2010 at 08:58 AM by Focused4Success

I use NTP to keep my clock synchronized. The method employed works only if the computer has access to the Internet on a consistent basis, which is usually the case for my computer, so this method works fine.

Two steps are required:
  1. Configuring the NTP client to keep the clock up to date
  2. Making sure the system time is set properly

NTP is configured via the following procedure:
  • Click on the Application Launcher
  • Click on the Applications tab
  • Click on the System tab
  • Scroll
