Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a UFO? ...no and it's not KDE either :)

A long long time ago in a galaxy not so far away....
I installed Debian Sarge. I used KDE for some time quite happily and then it happened once, only once, everything froze on logout, X server didn't respond and resetting it only got me into more trouble... no I didn't know what caused the problem and I 'm not sure even now...
As time went by I got tired of Sarge and tried some apt pinning and getting new kde from Etch... great... it worked fine...for some time :) and then the Klingon bastards struck again.... sub zero temperatures here we go again...
I googled for the problem, as freezing only happened on logout from kde and found out that alsa and arts daemon caused such problems, I turned off real time priority for sound in KDE pannel and it actually solved the problem....or at least that's what I thought... and then it all happened again on logout from Xfce ! What the heck I said...and started avoiding all of the KDE packages and switched to Fluxbox...
Now I think I finally solved the problem, I got the new xorg from Sid and got rid of my ATI drivers (fglrx) and now everything works... what was causing the problem, I haven't got a clue... either is new X robust enough not to crush or it had something to do with freezing... I'm not sure, but I doubt it.
And btw, I tried every concieveable thing including purging every trace of kde (naah didn't help much).
Well, what goes around comes around, time will tell if "darth side" will strike back again :)

Could have been the ATI drivers, they are known to cause problems. I've also taken a similar approach to you, both KDE and Gnome seem to have too much for me and they all inter-depend on each other it's a hassle. I ditched both a while ago, I have nothing at all KDE installed and the only Gnome stuff is GTK and libglade :)
Is working well so far!Posted 12-31-1969 at 07:00 PM by divukman -
KDE is bloated and gnome isn't far behind either. Only things I use frome kde are k3b and digikam. It's pretty much the same story with gnome. Besides who needs anything else then fluxbox :)
