Getting on with Fedora 9

Posted 08-01-2008 at 02:46 PM by Cushie

My first blog / 1 August 2008
I am a little addicted to trying out new distros so have several partitions on a 240 Gig hdd. My recent venture into Fedora 9 raised some very simple questions.

The format of Fedora is not recongnised by Debian style Os's so the Grub boot loader would not load Fedora. I was soon pointed in the right direction on the forum to do the format with 'gparted' which uses a 128 sector size and then reinstall without formatting by Fedora to 256 size. Worked a treat.

Being used to Synaptic in other distros I could not get on with the update manager. The progs were listed under various headings, that was is difficult in itself but the listing was not in 'alphabetic order' , strange?

Next I tried updating the system, no mention was made of the size of the download to come . 200 Megs on a slowish adsl was a bit off putting when you are trying to get to bed, furthermore the download rate was not shown, sad.

Hopefully I'll be advised of the tweaks and learn the new distro as time goes on.
