The Plunge....

Posted 06-30-2010 at 09:08 PM by chris hammond

well, I talk to myself a lot so why not blither on in print too. Linux, what a discovery. I just turned my son's almost dead- well actually it was past dead.xp in rigor mortis- ergh! It is now a lean, mean Linux machine- trying to convince a teenager to make the jump was difficult, and that was mostly because of the whole iTunes thing, but we worked around that by stripping as much as possible from xp so it is merely an Itunes system and very little else on a small partition. Being no expert I just winged it, but it works beautifully.
Next I will try and make a VM that does the same thing except it will run in Ubuntu.
I am a bit of a Fedora fan, but Ubuntu is brilliant for convincing people to cross over-it's got a pretty face!
Our home network, which is a windows one due to past necessity, now runs unbelievably better with a Linux pc thrown into the mix- it now picks up absolutely everything without so much as having to press one key.
I really dislike the word Blog, it's so clumsy and inelegant. Mind you, I suppose a lot of it is.

I wholeheartedly agree that a network with Linux machines on it is a better place! I find it trivially easy to do things that a Windows user couldn't even dream of!

BTW, if you're a fan of Fedora, use it! There are a lot of people around that reckon it's a more than worthy alternative to Ubuntu.
