Hi all !
First some of personnal history for my first blog post :
I started linux with Slackware 9.0 on an already old VAIO laptop in 2003. I learned a lot running it till Slackware 12.1
Then, while I met my wife, the hardware was becoming old. She had brand new Mac devices and was changing quite often her smartphone. I then shifted for a while with OSX and (jailbroken) iOS devices at home while forced to go with Windows at work. Thanks Google, opensource software and the (new at this time, at least for me) cloud things helped me to have a working system on multiple devices an OSs.
In late 2013, I retrieved an used Samasung Galaxy Note 2 LTE (t0lte). I enjoyed beeing back some to a sort of Linux device and started investigation this new for me Android system. To be honest, I rooted it and installed a custom ROM even before trying to use the Samasung TW ROM.
In january '15, bought a brand new ASUS UX303L laptop shipped with Windows 8.1. First tried to customize this but immediatly faced problems : everythings seems locked and trying to use the computer as I want is a pain. Time to go back to Linux !
I first had a look at avaible recent Linux distros. Starting with Slackware. Unfortunately, it looked a bit out of date and, without further investigation decide to go with Debian.
First step : with no CD/DVDRom, I'll had to use an USB stick and get rid of this EFI boot thing...

I doubt there is much difference in the age of applications between Slackware and Debian. I fully agree, yes. But at this time I was in urge to get rid of the MS crap and the last stable release of slackware was about 18 months old.
Having a too quick look, I feared that the old 3.x kernel would be a problem with my new hardware (it did, but with Debian's too).Posted 10-29-2015 at 05:11 AM by Tonus
