moving up with Slackware64

Posted 08-20-2009 at 03:52 PM by mudherm

Well I've upgraded my server to Slackware64 and after the HDD in my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ320CP began making some inappropriate noises I installed Win 7 64bit and Slackware64-current.

Now, I'm sat at work behind a http_proxy trying to get ssh to connect to my server at home. I can connect using windows but not from a console in Slack. I can't research the ProxyCommand because, unsurprisingly, the proxy blocks access to corkscrew and won't let me download connect. Just so you know - I'm at work 24/7 for 4 weeks at a time.

There must be a way. I can ssh/pSCP through windows to my server and get the files but the big question is will it install on a 64bit system?

On the Sony I have a couple of things to tidy up.

Webcam - Not working
DVD playback - Most DVD's are ex rentals(Previously watched/viewed from Blockbuster etc..) I think I need libdvdcss to watch them. (64bit?)
Alps touchpad - tapping does not work
Logitech bluetooth mouse - Acceleration is low.
WiFi - not configured yet.
Mozilla lightening - won't load(gives an error message but I moved on as the proxy/firewall thing blocks email.
OpenOffice - later, KOffice works for now.
powermanagement - needs tweaking.

A lot of this is HAL stuff I think but I'd like to get ssh working first. I'm not to bothered about piercing the proxy I just want to use it for now.

    Its going well....

I can use ssh and managed to work out what I can do with the proxy... I'm at home now working on the server but the laptop is at a stage where its usful.

I can't get the webcam to work but the touchpad, wifi and bluetooth mouse are much better. Still have to tweak the touchpad.

The server is a different story... I have 4mb installed but am only seeing 2mb. I looked at the config and its x86_64 is set so I'm wondering if my motherboard is the problem. As I ssh into this machine its a pain to see the bios settings.

I have an ide HD to go into it too but for now I'll consentrate on configuring samba, tomcat and appache.

Also have to look at my network configuration - the set is a bit ad-hoc...

    Still having fun...
