Java Applets: The Adventure Continues

Posted 12-30-2009 at 10:46 PM by CoderMan

Java applet programming is actually turning out to be a pretty good experience so far. I've already figured out the (very) basics of how to paint objects on the screen and how to handle mouse click events, and that pretty much covers the essence of all the future interface programming I am going to do for this work project. Except, I still need to figure out how to make GET/POST requests... If I find out that you can't do that in Java Applets I'm probably going to shoot myself.

Ballmer felt secure,

But Tuxians all unite,
and Freedom wins the day
For FOSS is still alive,
and fighting all the way! HEY!

Jingle bells, Windows smells... [repeat]

Okay, I've always hated web programming. Why? Because all my experience with web programming has been endeavors to create unholy mixes of HTML, JavaScript, and PHP scripts. Any time you try to turn a web page into an interactive application, it always feels like you are trying to contort the web to do something it doesn't want to do and was never meant to do.

Typical scenario: Picture me sitting in front of a Linux box, a Mac, and (through remote connection) a Windows box, adding...

Autotools: Somebody Does Understand!

Posted 12-19-2009 at 10:25 PM by CoderMan

So, I just recently switched my FOSS project from a single Makefile to autotools. Sadly, my guide for this journey was the official autotools documentation, and it was a less the pleasant experience. In fact, I got so discouraged I actually posted a poll to determine whether it would be less painful to learn autotools or to shoot myself in the foot.

I just came across the above...
