hardware manufacturers should cooperate on a free OS.

You have a multitude of PC vendors offering different preinstalled OSes.
Why cant they just put a small team of developers to snapshot a debian release and optimise it for their hardware? I am sure that sort of a system would be faster and more reliable than something picked off the net or bought from a store by a person who really doesnt know what is good for himself.
At least it would be more stable than Windoze.
