Very Bad Thing Make Compy Go Boom, Redux: Partition Edition

Posted 05-01-2009 at 11:47 AM by chexmix

I've been posting some in re: my efforts to fill up the empty partition I was left with after the first "Compy Go Boom" incident ... because it hasn't gone well. In fact the way it HAS gone has led me to suspect there is something wrong with the partition in question ... though it certainly doesn't seem to mind having stuff installed to it.

When with the help of a very smart coworker I was attempting to analyze the situation via Puppy Linux, the partition was responding very oddly ... when trying to run fdisk or cfdisk (I forget which, though I believe it was the latter) we kept getting error messages regarding that partition. Attempts to run various fsck utilities on the partition went dead weirdly - at first the utilities seemed to confirm that there were errors to be fixed ... then, after they apparently done their work, they reported that there had been no errors to fix.

I wish I had the output to share here but my coworker is a fast typist! ;^)

Anyway, I'm now thinking, after failing to get a working Arch or CRUX Linux installation on this partition, that the time has come to delete it and recreate it ... remembering, this time around, to account for the fact that the partition numbers could change (e.g. edit lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo).
