Ultimate Unification: CrunchBang 10 December 2010

This week we examine three new arrivals on the scene:

a. Ultimate Edition 2.8 Lite
b. Unity 32 and 64 bit versions of edition 10-2
c. CrunchBang 10, "Statler", 32 and 64 bit versions using both XFCE and OpenBox.

All three work, some better than others.

One keeper, two to throw back: Lubuntu is very good, excellent installer, the best in the business, in my opinion. The newest versions of Salix XFCE, and Mint LXDE are both fatally flawed, could not be installed. n.b. Lubuntu's times are all made using the 32 bit version!! The time to halt is the best in my 12 year testing experience, with any operating system, on x86 architecture.

So, here's the data from testing a few UNITY distros....

First, a reminder of how this testing algorithm works:

Hardware: 2 computers used in this study, both are "old", i.e. not contemporary devices, but still very functional.

One computer (C8) is five years old, and the other, (C4), ten years of age.
C4: DFI CA64-TC, PIII 1.13 GHz, 1.0 GB SDRAM, IDE hard drive. Benchmarks: 2.7 GIPS, 1.5 GFlops, 0.67 GB/sec;...
