Things to Know about Glibc: Protect Your Linux Systems

On 16th February 2016 a security fault was revealed because of which many devices and apps are at risk – Linux servers being a portion of it. It is a bug identified as ‘glibc bug’ which can cause pain to hundreds of devices, applications and softwares which are internet connected. It lets attacker to lead a code into the memory of the device which in turn causes hacking attacks. The attacker can then control smartphones, internet routers, computers etc. It is initiated in building blocks of the internet which can also negatively affect apps and websites. It is a vital part of Linux operating system.
Google engineers developed the patch in association with at Red Hat’s security experts. They are able to fill the susceptibility to some extent but wide adoption is still left.


What is glibc bug?


Glibc bug was originated in glibc (GNU C Library) which is the employment of GNU project of C standard library. It was introduced by Free Software Foundation in early 90’s for their GNU operating system. In short, glibc is an open source library of codes which are utilized in internet connected devices and web development.
The bug alert was previously announced in July 2015. Google researchers say that they first desired to study and comprehend the issue and later call out to glibc keep takers. Whilst at Red Hat a separate team was occupied on the issue.
Devices having Linux operating system are affected by this susceptibility. Devices include wireless routers, internet of things devices, surveillance cameras, servers etc. Bitcon Softwares, Linux Computers and anything or everything which is built using PHP, ruby and python are affected by this bug as well. Facebook, Twitter, Drop box etc. use these languages.
Google android also functions on Linux however android phones are harmless because a different version is employed. However, android applications can be affected. Windows and OS X are not at all affected.
Make sure to regularly upgrade the security versions for all the linked devices and system. Even your business hosting services needs security upgrades. Because many a time’s organizations stop announcing security updates once they stop vending their products and services. It should be imperative for manufacturers to announce security updates as at some point or the other vulnerabilities will be discovered in connected devices.
Google has released a security patch for originators who have used the system. It is acknowledged as “proof of concept” attack through which industrialists and developers can inspect software for detecting defects and then taking necessary footsteps to overcome if at all any defect is perceived.
