Should we stop spreading Linux?

Posted 03-10-2009 at 05:08 AM by bitpicker

It's one of these days. Sometimes I feel like one of a small number of lemmings who have learned to turn right before they reach the edge of the cliff. Now we few lemmings are standing there, desperately trying to keep all the others from following their one-dimensional path to self-destruction. But is it really worth it?

Sometimes I feel that people have an inalienable right to their own stupidity. Users using Windows is natural selection at work. Let them go down. Don't try to help them propagate their inferior genes into our gene pool or they'll take us down with them.

Today I found a discussion in another Linux forum in which a very basic Linux user proudly reported that he had found and followed a solution for a nagging problem on the internet: he found a way to enable root on his Ubuntu system, so that he is now able to log in as root immediately so that he will never be bothered by permission errors with removable media ever again, ever.

That's what ex-Windows users do. They apply their learning skills to dragging down Linux to the level of Windows so that, given enough of those lemmings we successfully diverted from the cliff, one day a Linux virus will actually stand a snowflake's chance in hell of spreading among Linux users, because the ex-Windows users managed to introduce unnecessary security problems. I can see a whole new industry popping up, built around the concept of programming security problems for Linux so they feel more at home.

Well, tonight I'm going to give a lecture on IT security again, and I will present Linux as an alternative again, and I may get the chance of diverting yet another lemming or two from the edge. I'm a bleeding heart deep inside, what can I do? But right now, if you asked me, I'd say let them go.

Thanks Robin - you made me laugh this morning. I know the feeling - when Vista came out that was the turning point for me, what an irritating OS. As an IT guy I'm tired of fixing XP too. At work it doesn't really seem to matter whether people are local admins or not - most still hose the thing eventually; guess I shouldn't complain it's a job - broken record kind of job - but it pays the bills.
