Posted 03-29-2023 at 08:44 AM by beachboy2
Updated 04-11-2023 at 10:06 AM by beachboy2

In order to make the transition from Windows 10 (or W8.1, W11) to Linux as smooth as possible, it is necessary to plan ahead, take plenty of time and do proper preparation. I am assuming that all the required software will be downloaded using the existing W10 machine or another Windows-based one.

Preparation

1. Backup all your personal data from W10 to an external hard drive before proceeding any further!

2. Are you likely to use W10 again? If the answer...

Asus T100T & Linux

Posted 03-25-2023 at 02:40 AM by beachboy2
Updated 01-18-2024 at 01:39 AM by beachboy2

I was recently given an old Asus T100T and just as an exercise I decided to install either MX-21.3 64-bit or antiX 22 64-bit. The original OS was Windows 8.1.

NB It is very important to note that this Asus T100T (and similar models) have 64-bit CPUs, but are crippled by 32-bit UEFI firmware.

Items to note before progressing further
:

1. To access the BIOS, hold down the F2 key, press the power button and wait for the BIOS screen to appear. Then...

Updated 01-26-2023 at 01:20 AM by beachboy2

Upon starting my Linux Mint 21 PC, I was greeted with this message:

New CPU installed. fTPM/PSP NV corrupted or fTPM/PSP NV structure changed.

Press Y to reset fTPM. If you have Bitlocker or encryption enabled, the system will not boot without a recovery key.

Press N to keep previous fTPM record and continue system boot. fTPM will NOT enable in new CPU, you can swap back to the old CPU to recover TPM related keys and data

Ryzen shine, again! (Ryzen 5 5600G)

My earlier blog featured the Ryzen 5 3400G:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...og.php?b=38257

The Ryzen 5 5600G is a cheaper and more powerful alternative to the Intel i5-11400 which also has integrated graphics.

For Linux users there are 2 main points to consider before using the Ryzen 5600G:

1. BIOS version on motherboard
2. Linux kernel version

Surprisingly, the Realtek LAN controller was not a problem (see below)....

Install a Linux distro in VirtualBox

Posted 04-06-2022 at 04:26 AM by beachboy2
Updated 04-06-2022 at 06:30 AM by beachboy2

I am assuming that you have already installed VirtualBox and that your CPU supports virtualization, using either Intel VT-x or AMD-V (SVM) which has been enabled in the BIOS.

The ISO file for the Linux distro (e.g. MX Linux) to be installed in VirtualBox has been downloaded to the user’s Downloads directory.

Open VirtualBox and click on New.

1. Enter a descriptive name into the Name box (e.g. MX Linux).
2. Select Linux as the Type.
