Slackpkg Tutorial for Security Updates

Slackpkg 2.81.1 is included in the Full Installation of Slackware-13.1. One of its functions is to keep your system up-to-date with regard to security updates from the network/Internet. It does not replace pkgtool, but uses pkgtool to install/upgrade packages.

You need to uncomment one mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors file

# vi /etc/slackpkg/mirrors

Slackware-13.1-Hacks-Google Chrome Hardening

Google Chrome Web Browser Hardening

These are the settings I use on Google Chrome, however you may go more stricter or looser with your security settings depending on your needs. I tend to disable any passwords saved, suggestions for searches, etc. Also, you can remove a lot of junk by using a hosts file (see the Hosts File Hack) which will disable banners, ads, etc.

Slackware-13.1-Hacks-Su/Sudo Hardening

Slackware-13.1-Hacks-Bluetooth Mouse Logitech

Logitech Bluetooth Mouse

The hardware used for this example are:
1. I/O Gear GBU221 USB Bluetooth Dongle
2. Logitech V470 Bluetooth Mouse

Be sure that /etc/rc.d/rc.bluetooth is executable so that bluetooth service will start when your machine is rebooted. If it...

Updated 03-04-2011 at 11:50 PM by arniekat (Formatting Problem)

Asus EeePC 1015PEM RaLink 2860 Wi-Fi Card (RT2860)

I have NetworkManager from GNOME, but you can install wicd-1.7.0 from the /extras directory so you have a wireless applet that will allow you to set up wireless networking.

To get this wi-fi card to work on Slackware 13.1, blacklist the module rt2800pci.

# vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the following line(s) to this file

# This is to fix the module problem on my Asus Eeepc 1015PEM...
