Check which versions of X that version of catalyst support.
A prerelease of X doesn't strike me as a good choice, but I could be wrong.

What is your video card?

Code:
lspci -nnvv
And if you have lshw installed, run (as root):
Code:
lshw -C video

It actually wouldn't surprise me if Arch was using a pre-release of X as default. The catalyst version is most likely from the repositories too. I just have a feeling that the catalyst version may be too new for the card.
