Question wireless keyboard and mouse problem in X

Hello everyone

I recently installed arch linux and after overcoming issues with networking and drivers I have reached a problem that two days worth of research haven't solved. After starting X, neither my wireless keyboard nor mouse respond at all. I followed the Beginner's Guide, searched this forum, searched other forums, and double checked my inputs. I typed/copied the relevant information to #! and posting from there, so here's what I have:

Logitech EX110 Keyboard and Logitech laser mouse

1)
Code:
pacman -S xf86-input-evdev
2)
Added usb and usbinput to HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf, regenerated initramfs images:
Code:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb usbinput filesystems"
3)
Code:
lsmod | grep -i usb

usbhid 38146 1 hid_logitech
hid 75579 2 hid_logitech
4)
Code:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: unknown error (null)
Some important things I noticed
1) setxkbmap us yields Cannot open display "default display" in both root and main user
2) setxkbmap -print -verbose 10 yields the same

At this point I feel like I am overlooking some simple component but I have no more leads so any help with this problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is this the mouse and keyboard that use the "Logitech Universal Receiver" with the USB plug? If so, they should work by default in Arch as far as drivers are concerned. If this is the case, it may be something with your USB hardware.

Do other USB devices work okay?

Yea I thought too that the evdev drivers should have taken care of finding the keyboard and mouse. My USB devices work normally in my windows partition, in grub, and tty1. It's only in X that they do not respond.

The keyboard is older than the mouse so they use separate usb recievers but when I do lsmod | grep -i usb I get the correct readouts for both of the recievers.

I read this is the beginner's guide:

Xorg may fail to detect your keyboard correctly. This might give problems with your keyboard layout or keyboard model not being set correctly.

To see a full list of keyboard models, layouts, variants and options, open:

Code:
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst
It then outlines steps using setxkbmap, none of which I can perform because I get always get the line "Cannot open display "default display."

Is it a problem with evdev or something else as I can't utilize setxkbmap?
