What Are Your Hardware Specs for Arch?

I've been told that Arch is on par with Slackware in terms of difficulty, which isn't exactly happy news for a *nix n00b like me. The most frustrating thing I found about Slackware is finding the necessary drivers for graphics, sound and Wi-Fi. There's also a host of hardware compatibility issues - Slack just doesn't seem to like some models.

I'm planning to buy a bargain laptop to dedicate solely to *nix. Thus, I was wondering what do all the Arch users like, and if you had any unworkable problems with Arch on your systems.

Arch has always worked better for me with problematic hardware than other distros. I have one laptop that I wasn't able to get any other distro working with, except Arch and an old version of TinyMe Linux.

Their documentation is excellent and you shouldn't have any trouble finding and installing the correct drivers for your graphics card.

And make sure you have the Beginners' Guide handy when you install.

I've never not been able to get any Linux running on any hardware. There are limits to patience however.

Arch is very accommodating of i686 (or better), and the doco is awesome. Not quite up to gentoo, but bloody good.

Buy your kit and go to it.
