Weird XFCE screen flicker

When ever I start XFCE4 by using 'startxfce4' after logging into my account, there is some strange flicker all over the screen. It only happens if I log in as a normal user, but not as root.

Not much to go on. Screen flickers are usually to do with slow refresh rates.
