Weird Login Problem

Hey guys, hope everything is well

Newbie/weird/havn't experienced before question. I usually run slackware however decided to give archbang a go. i logged in as root then did the usual
adduser 0men ... blah blah blah
set the password

however when i try to log back in with username and password it doesnt work :S

For some reason it comes up with the arch bang logo in the background with the Username prompt: i type 0men. Then comes the Password prompt: 0men. .....

Strangely it then goes into a Slackware look alike login, (just text) then reverts back to the slackbang login screen :S

I have absoultey no klue what is happening? is archbang just a live cd meant to be run as root???

It is possible that the 0men account doesn't have a home directory. In that case Linux will usually refuse to log in to the account. I say usually because this behavior can be changed.

If the home directory exists then it may belong to a different user account or have other permission problems.

Log on as root and check the /var/log/auth.log file for login problems. You may want to try to log on as 0men first just to be sure that the failure messages are at the end of the file, just for convenience.

So the Linux authentication appears to be working. That points to the graphical login as the problem. The /var/log/auth.log may have useful information. Also the /var/log/Xorg.0.log may have useful information. Also the /home/0men/.xsession-errors file may have useful information.

Okay did that and cant see anything wrong... unless its different to slack (which i doubt)

If i go back into the login screen and type username 0men and then password (something random) the screen just goes back to the username prompt.

However if i type username 0men and then password (my proper password) it flashes with another login prompt , however it quickly quits and returns to the archbang login screen :S

It sounds like the log in process is restarting the X window manager. The log in prompt that you see when the screen goes black is the Linux console log in prompt. You would only see that when the X window manager is not running. In this case it is only while the X window manager is resetting itself.

I don't know if there is anything to be gained but you can prove once again that Linux authentication is working by pressing <Cntrl><Alt><F2>. You should see a console log in prompt. You should be able to log on as 0men there.

If you do that you could then stop the gdm graphical log in manager. Then you could manually run the startx command to see if that shows any errors.
