I have installed Arch 2009.8 along with the repo snapshot taken in the day I downloaded the CD iso...
( I like to have snapshots, just in case i do not have a working conection )
I have synced the repo, ran Pacman -Syu, this installed kernel 2.6.32, Installed Xorg, ran Xorg -configure, dumped the xorg.conf.<whatever> from /root into /etc/X11/xorg.conf, cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc /home/alex, ran pacman -S wmii icewm fluxbox ratpoison, and changed the exec thing in .xinitrc to icew, and chmoded it to 777.

my xorg.log.0 is as follows, no (EE) at all... :
Code:
This is way too big to put it here... I send as attachment
What's strange is that i did exacly as I did in another laptop I have, and it worked allright in this other one... Meaning that the repo is self coherent and I have a functional Arch install, and even built several working AUR packages against it...
My GPU is an Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT, but Xorg-Vesa driver should work out of the box... right....?
What pisses me most is that I have gone throgh all the drill and made it before... Dunno what am i doing differently now...
What's even more strange, startx as root drops me in icewm... everything works fine... glxgears is not there, despite the fact Xorg is ( duh ... ), and when I logout from icewm, it drops me back to console... no (EE) in xorg.0.log....
You could try removing /home/alex/.xinitrc (and whatever else) and see if `startx` works. If it does, something is obviously wrong with one of the files you've just removed from your home directory. You might also want to try logging in directly as `alex` via one of the virtual consoles, rather than using `su`.
