hello i am having trouble updating my system . The information notice pop up showed i had numerous updates to make so i opened a terminal and entered pacman -Syu which returned dependency faults so tried pacman -Suu with same results .I have attached the output of the terminal for you (as you will see i forgot my password initially).I hope this will suffice and you can help thank you in advance Brian. Sorry just noticed can't post attachments so here is my output:"warning: config file /etc/pacman.conf, line 18: directive 'SyncFirst' in section 'options'' not recognised. ::synchronising package databases... lib32.. core.. platform.. desktop.. apps.. games is up to date::starting full system upgrade.. resolving dependencies... looking for inter-conflicts.. error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: madwifi: requires linux<3.10" I have an acer aspire 3Gb ram AMD sempron 3200+ 64bit with nvidia GeForce 6100.

Hi:Welcome to LQ-

Are you running Arch Linux?
If so I am sorry I can't help. I don't know Arch but I'm sure we have members here that can assist you-

Here's your errors in code tags-

Code:
"warning: config file /etc/pacman.conf, line 18: directive 'SyncFirst' in section 'options'' not recognised. ::synchronising package databases... lib32.. core.. platform.. desktop.. apps.. games is up to date::starting full system upgrade.. resolving dependencies... looking for inter-conflicts.. error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: madwifi: requires linux<3.10"
It looks like packages are missing and dependencies have not been met. (I'm guessing)

Is that sempron a dual or quad core?

Have you been doing partial updates? Or do you have something installed from AUR that you need to take care of first? How old is this install? How long since you updated?

It says that madwifi needs less that kernel 3.10
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
The wiki says
Quote:
madwifi is an old, obsolete driver. Not present in Arch kernel since 2.6.39.1
Start with telling what you are doing. Did you just install arch from an old install CD? Or is this a machine that's not been updated for a while.

unable to update chakra 64bit

Why have you assumed it to be Arch linux? I can assure you the label on the disc is chakra and the start up logo is chakra.I installed it off a disk from linux format magazine and updated the day i installed it and not again until i seen the pop up with a huge amount of updates suggested. Weirdly i have also had a go at an arch live disc but could not get the wifi working but that was in another thread. The quoted reply above in my first query was the output from chakra which i would love to get fully updated as im starting to think i may use it as my main os.So with the renewed information that i am not speaking about arch are there any more suggestions. Ps i don't have the knowledge to apply dependencies etc. without some instruction as to what to do.I am a newbie at linux internals.Although i've used ubuntu before it is somewhat idiot proof and all i ever had to do was press yes or no.Look forward to finding out what to do next. Thanks for the attention ps The WiFi works fine in my chakra

Last edited by bri_c; 10-05-2013 at 05:27 PM. Reason: noticed a remark relating to an old wifi driver which will probably help with the arch problem

Chakra and Arch Linux use the same commandline utility-
Chakra Linux is a desktop distribution forked from Arch Linux. It uses the K Desktop Environment as its primary and only officially-supported desktop environment.

With the Pacman package manager you only need one command: "pacman"! You specify what you want Pacman to do by tacking on command options. A detailed explanation of Pacman and all of it's options is beyond the scope of this lesson, but you can check out the Pacman page of the excellent Arch Wiki for more details.

Kindly answer Teckk's questions so he can make a diagnoses and advise you.

To confirm what version of the kernel you are using you can run:
Code:
uname -a
To clarify what release you are running you can run:
Code:
cat /etc/*release*
Running those commands and posting the output will assist us in helping you.

A dependency is a program or library that another program needs to run:-

http://chakra-linux.org/wiki/index.p...man#Installing

Arch is a rolling release, this last year I think that I would call it a galloping release. There have been lots of changes like the file system update, migration to systemd, /bin and /sbin being removed from the file system. You can't leave an arch machine for months and then update, or install from a dated CD, you'll have problems. So much so that you may have to reinstall with a current release. There are at times some manual intervention required before updating with pacman as you can see here.

I can't tell what you have wrong from your post.

thanks for clarifying the chakra - arch link i have enclosed the output from the cmds you suggested :: brian@chakra-pc ~]$ uname -a

Code:
Linux chakra-pc 3.9.2-1-CHAKRA #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 19 21:38:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
This confirms that you are using 3.9.2-1 version of the Linux Kernel.
It also explains that you have a x86_64;(a 64-bit computer architecture)

Code:
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Chakra Linux"
NAME="The Chakra-Project"
VERSION="Benz"
ID=chakra
Indeed you are running Chakra Linux and the Codename is "Benz"

As teckk said;
Quote:
This error looks like a place to start.
The current version of the kernel is 3.11.4
https://kernel.org/

The error messages states that "madwifi: requires<3.10"
So; this tar is available:
Code:
3.10.15.tar.xz is an xz archive that is 69.8 MB
Only Teckk can advise you on which version of the kernel you should use. This is not my area of expertease.

Yes, a 6 month old install trying to use arch's latest repo. Which is what pacman -Syu does.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...2F_AHB_Drivers
The wiki says that madwifi is deprecated and ath5k replaces it. Have you tried blacklisting madwifi and using ath5k?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_modules
Quote:
madwifi is an old, obsolete driver. Not present in Arch kernel since 2.6.39.1[4].
ath5k is newer driver, which replaces the madwifi driver. Currently a better choice for some chipsets, but not all chipsets are supported (see below)
ath9k is the newest of these three drivers, it is intended for newer Atheros chipsets. All of the chips with 802.11n capabilities are supported.
Doesn't look like arch is using it at all.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.p...P=50&SB=v&SO=a
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/madwifi-utils-svn/

There is also a forum for Chakra. You may get better results there.

Is there a reason bri_c; that your holding onto a 6 month old install?
It's probably a sure bet as to why you are having trouble updating your system.

You should consider the counsel that teckk has given you to try the Chakra forum:-
