hello i am having trouble updating my system . The information notice pop up showed i had numerous updates to make so i opened a terminal and entered pacman -Syu which returned dependency faults so tried pacman -Suu with same results .I have attached the output of the terminal for you (as you will see i forgot my password initially).I hope this will suffice and you can help thank you in advance Brian. Have you been doing partial updates? Or do you have something installed from AUR that you need to take care of first? How old is this install? How long since you updated?

It says that madwifi needs less that kernel 3.10

Why have you assumed it to be Arch linux? I can assure you the label on the disc is chakra and the start up logo is chakra.I installed it off a disk from linux format magazine and updated the day i installed it and not again until i seen the pop up with a huge amount of updates suggested. Weirdly i have also had a go at an arch live disc but could not get the wifi working but that was in another thread. The quoted reply above in my first query was the output from chakra which i would love to get fully updated as im starting to think i may use it as my main os.So with the renewed information that i am not speaking about arch are there any more suggestions. Ps i don't have the knowledge to apply dependencies etc. without some instruction as to what to do.I am a newbie at linux internals.Although i've used ubuntu before it is somewhat idiot proof and all i ever had to do was press yes or no.Look forward to finding out what to do next. Arch is a rolling release, this last year I think that I would call it a galloping release. There have been lots of changes like the file system update, migration to systemd, /bin and /sbin being removed from the file system. You can't leave an arch machine for months and then update, or install from a dated CD, you'll have problems. So much so that you may have to reinstall with a current release. There are at times some manual intervention required before updating with pacman as you can see here.

The wiki says that madwifi is deprecated and ath5k replaces it. Have you tried blacklisting madwifi and using ath5k?

Is there a reason bri_c; that your holding onto a 6 month old install?
It's probably a sure bet as to why you are having trouble updating your system.

You should consider the counsel that teckk has given you to try the Chakra forum:-
