I am not sure but the first thing to do when in doubt is to copy /etc/default/grub file to the same directory (do not forget to rename) and if something does not go right you will have a backup copy to replace the original file.

I am not sure if this is distribution specific, but in Debian you have to specify your background image for grub in /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme, I think it is the same for other distributions, but maybe you have to exchange the debian in the filename with your distributions name.
