Need help with Arch installation

Hello,

yesterday I installed arch for the first time
after installation I did:

pacman -Syu

all went well
then I did

pacman -S kde

whats weird is that in the middle of downloading it stopped
and running that command again didn't work,
only after I change the mirror twice, ti worked again
why is that ?

now,
after all is installed I tried running kdm
but nothing happened.
how do I run kde ?

thanx
Eli

have you added kdm to your daemons in /etc/rc.conf?
im not sure about kdm, but with gdm, hal has to be started before gdm in order for it to work (by putting hal before gdm in the daemons.)

No need to add kdm to your daemons. Just edit your /etc/inittab and remove the comment from id5 and put a comment in id3 . Now scroll all the way down and comment in xdm and comment out kdm. Reboot. Kdm should launch now automatically in runlevel 5.

but actually the problem was
that I didn't installed xorg
and that I have to run hal before X

You don't HAVE to run hal before xorg, you just need to if you want to avoid having to configure a xorg.conf. (Which you tend to have to anyway if you have an nvidia card).

I run dbus and hal. This help me when I use thunar. Or else I face a lot of problems with USB mounting.
