Initial Arch install

So I have Arch base installed. But...now what?

What programs are essential for desktop?

I know I need xorg and a WM, but what else?

Hdparm...etc

hi there,
.... depend on what you want to do?
programming? gaming? web-surfing?
my suggestion is:
Code:
pacman --sync --refresh
pacman -Su
pacman -S xorg
pacman -S fluxbox
pacman -S vim
and after that is up to you..
regards,

Well, a bit of both programming (python) and web-surfing (opera, gaim, nicotine)

Also Blender, Wings3d, Gimp, and Cinescape

What I guess I meant was, what *essential* packages would EVERYONE require on a new install?

hdparm
xorg
etc

hi there,
yes, i got it. but this a question of necessity.
what everyone requires does not exist. some people with the kernel and a terminal can write an OS... others need KDE...
it is a matter of taste.. do not bloat your system if you don't have the necessity.. that is the great thing about a distro like arch... you don't need to have what you don't use
start working..
miss a program??
Code:
pacman -S $my_program
that is how it works..
anyway, a base Arch install come with some apps already..
