i have used rofi for a while but found it too convoluted and clunky for my taste.
i think it uses its own howkey, i.e. you're supposed to start it in background, then use its own hotkey to "show".
so you do need to start it in i3's config, but NOT assign a hotkey in i3's config.

What I did was put the following in ~/.config/i3/config:
Code:
bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id ~/.config/i3/rofi
And then ~/.config/i3/rofi is an executable script containing:
Code:
rofi -modi combi -show combi -combi-modi drun, run -no-levenshtein-sort

that is not a good answer.
you got 2 different suggestions.
what did you do with it?
adding to that your own research, i.e. reading rofi & i3 documentation?

I agree with the other guys. Most likely in my past year experience. You just need to start it in your ~/.config/i3/config

Have you looked into that?
https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/commen..._in_i3_config/
I did not bother reading further on

-- i'm quite happy with dmenu

as said you need to replace this default here:
Quote:
# start dmenu (a program launcher)
bindsym $mod+d exec dmenu_run
