I can't connect to the internet!

I've just done a base install of Arch 0.7 on a new compaq presario R3000 notebook.

I edited rc.conf for static IP with gateway (took out the !) and put my default gateway as a nameserver entry into resolv.conf. I even added the hostname to /etc/hosts.

I can't ping, wget or use pacman (pacman can't connect to the ftp sites)

ifconfig shows shows my eth0 connection UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST

I'm presuming that my ethernet module was loaded ok by hotplug (I think it must be eth1394), but I have to admit, I'm not sure which one is my ethernet module from lsmod - how do I find out?

I thought that whatever wasn't working might be dependent upon pcmcia, so I installed and enabled that to start at boot, but to no avail.

I'm really stuck and could do with some help!

Thanks

First, try this:
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
The, run
Code:
ifconfig -a
and post the results please. If you need to put it in a file for transfer to another OS or copy/paste, then do this:
Code:
ifconfig -a > FILENAME

I don't actually have the inet1 service, but I did try /etc/rc.d/network stop and then start, but it didn't help.

Getting the output of ifconfig was quite a challenge without usb sticks or floppy drives, but here it is

eth0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 52-3F-02-00-52-3F-02-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:192.168.2.21 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:21 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:756 (756.0 b)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:558 (558.0 b) TX bytes:558 (558.0 b)

sit0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-31-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
NOARP MTU:1480 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

The top line strikes me as a bit suspicious - shouldn't it say something like "Link encap:Ethernet", and the HWaddr looks a bit long.

Anyway, if you need any more files or logs, I'd be happy to post them

Thanks!

ok, I fixed
The problem was the the 8139cp module wasn't supporting my ethernet card, so I loaded up the 8139too module and put it in rc.conf for good measure. I then added the 8139cp module to the hotplug blacklist (don't know if this is necessary, but it's working fine without it).

This was quite a surprise, I just kind of expect things like ethernet cards to work out of the box, but I suppose it's not always that way. hopefully there won't be too many other glitches along the way!

Cheers
