Help - I hate the new gnome and want the old one backČ

Hi,

Just did a system upgrade - big mistake.

Gnome is ugly. Gow to I restore it? All the icons are gone, for example. No trashcan, no folders, I'm lost, and not happy...

Please help! Tnx

I just want the classic Gnome back, I dont have a desktop, not right-click...help???

EDIT it is ugly!!!!!
EDIT 2 - I cannot right-click on the desktop...

EDIT 3 : (after a good night's sleep and some looking around the fora) it seems Gnome3 still has some wrinkles for Arch, so of course I was wetting myself...sorry for the panic attack, this "control freak" (me, that is) will have to learn to chill...closing this thread...but maybe still looking for an other desktop...dunnow... ;)

EDIT 4 : Solved : I installed XFCE, never looked back, never will, I love it :)

People are always scared of new things. Everytime something minor changes on facebook a thousand petitions start up and then within a few motnhs people forgot all about it, and are enjoying the benefits. Just give gnome3 time and be open minded. It's good. You don't need all that other stuff, and it's very quick to get going and much faster to use.

Yo! Tnx for these supporting words...this system, though, is my workhorse ;) ... so, I still have my .Desktop folder and all the content, can I transfer that to the new desktop?

Monday is a-commin' closer... :D

After the update there was a brief popup that Gnome did'nt start up right...but I did'nt pay any attention...silly me...so, what does it need to run in full?

I would suggest checking some reviews of it and see if what you have does match up. It certainly is a lot different, so hard to know if what you have in front of you is correct or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsp602kN-RI

Thanks!

I'm utterly convinced the engine to be gorgeous and stable. A beutifull thing, but I'm lost, that's all. If I could restore the previous experience and keep the engine, I'd be glad. Otherwise I'll just have to get used to this... :)

Tnx for the link, I'm off to the movies.

The desktop workspace no longer displays the contents of the user's ~/Desktop directory
That explains the empty workspace...I will just have to cope...

The YT video helped...but now I need to hug my teddy bear...

So much to get used to...but...on the big plus side, this thing is fast!

If you like gnome2, you should install xfce. It is much closer to the gnome-panel than the new shell is.

Tnx andrewthomas, I'll look into it...

The thing is that a change like that could throw my workflow around...

The desktop reminds me of my first Fedora, flat, blue and kinda barren...

XFCE? Okay, lemmes see that!

BTW - this is the only forum I did get a decent answer - thanks guys. This PC is my lifeline, so I was really-really scared last night... :D

I am very happy with Gnome 3.0.1 in 'Forced Fallback Mode' set to 'ON' that gives me a similar work flow compared to Gnome 2.

I have opted for 'File Manager' to NOT handle the desktop, and @Thor_2.0 - quite like that flat blue and barren look actually.

Granted, underneath there will be improvements...but the flat look, hmm. I'm lost in Gnome really, no screensaver, no icons, no themes...

I dunnow...maybe it's because it came very unannounced, and I paniced at the state of my primary system. That's all... :)

Gnome 3 is not as different from Gnome 2 as you think it is! I have great news for you:

If you hate the default unusable Gnome 3 desktop (known as Gnome Shell) with the icons on the left and 3D effects, then remove gnome-shell. Do it this way in Arch:

pacman -R gnome-shell (wait to do this if you need desktop icons or right-click on desktop features)

Logout and log back in and it's gone.

Next, if you need to move panels, add or remove applets from the panels, hold down alt+right arrow and then right click the panel and you will immediately see all of the Gnome 2 missing features are there afterall.

If you need to right-click on the desktop or put icons on it, do this (before uninstalling gnome-shell):

pacman -S gnome-tweak-tool

From here, in gnome-shell, run gnome-tweak-tool and set it to allow file manager to manage desktop, enable desktop icons, change fonts, and whatever else you want to do in there. After this, then you can remove gnome-shell.

Note, any time you want to use gnome-tweak-tool, you are REQUIRED to install gnome-shell and log into it - or else the tweak tool won't work.
