GRUB_TIMEOUT not working

Hi

I often install other linux systems on this laptop and found after one installation grub failed to show. So I believed I had a corrupted mbr.

So this is what I have done:

I used gparted to clear sda1 by formatting it as fat16 and setting the boot flag.

I deleted all /etc/default/grub.* files and removed /etc/grub.d/.* and /boot/grub/.* to start again.

I used the following command to erase the mbr. # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1

Then:

Code:
# pacman -R grub
# pacman -S grub
# grub-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sda
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Ok the grub menu shows on bootup. But even though GRUB_TIMEOUT=5 in /etc/default/grub the menu very briefly flashes onto the screen and immediatly starts to boot into the

GRUB_DEFAULT system which is arch.

/etc/default/grub

Code:

I have just cleaned out the keyboard (again) this time given the laptop a thump and low and behold on the first reboot grub worked

perfectly. So it looks as though this was the problem, sticky enter key.

It is an older laptop so so it will probably play up again.
