Fluxbox to start with startx?

I am trying to run fluxbox as my wm.

I have installed arch.
I have changed root password.
did adduser.
took awhile to get my setting right in xf86config, but it is finally done.
I can "startx", but all I get is the windowmaker wm???
I would like to use flux I use it on my slackware ten box, and love it.
I went to inittab file and changed the "3" to a "5" to startx at boot, but I was really slow to load, and I had to ctrl+alt+f1 to change settings back.
I don't need flux to start at boot, but would like to start it with startx.

Should I try changing the rc.conf?

Any help is appreciated.

I will keep reading and googling.

I am a to command line. I am used to SUSE and Fedora.
I never had to configure anything . I am not bitching. I have learned alot since installing slack 10, FreeBsd, and Arch. I'm ditching Suse and Fedora for awhile til I feel more competent in what I am doing.

PC is :
Hp pavilion n3390.
P3 laptop.
6gig hd and 128 ram.

Knoppix loads perfectly,. So i guess if I can eventually get everything to work through ARCH.

Very happy new Arch user.

in your ~/.xinitrc, put the fluxbox command.
the default used is in /etc/X11/Xinit/. ~/.xinitrc overrides it.

Having bios problems with that laptop. Thanks for the help.

I went into .xinitrc last night and removed th # from in front of
exec fluxbox, but I am not sure if i did it in ~/.xinitrc.
Didn't do anything.

Is there any difference between vi and emac?

I prefer vi.

So vi ~/.xinitrc

fluxbox &

?

Thanks again.

If you have another arch machine, look in /var/cache/packman/pkg/. for the stuff to write to cd, or if you just go to the arch repository and grab the ...pkg.tar.gz files you want, you can write them to cd. Since the machine does not have internet, you can't just 'pacman -S pkgname', you have to 'pacman -A pkgname.version.pkg.tar.gz' each one.

I just wanted to post a follow up.

I am still kinda stuck. I would like to have fluxbox as wm, but am ok with blackbox and XFCE for now.

I think alot of my problems will be solved with packman -Syu.

I haven't had success with ppp, so I am trying to get a wireless card up and running.

I am running into a brutal learning curve coming from Suse 9.0, and I have too many distros I am trying to set up at the same time (slack10,freebsd,Arch) on different computers so I am getting a little confused.

Thanks for the help and patience so far.

I gave up on Arch.
It's too advanced for me.
I will try it again after I learn a little more and get a high speed non dialup internet connection.(hopefully beginning of 2005)

Thanks for all the help..

Following applies for mandrake.
Add the following exactly as it appears to your /.xinitrc file and you should be able to use the startx command

exec /usr/bin/X11/fluxbox

agust thanks for the post...

I gave up on Arch.

The distro is for linux expert types.

I am not one of them. (yet)

I couldn't even find fluxbox on Arch.

no internet connection on that computer, and no network internet sharing.

Thanks,
Blair.

I will be back to Arch when high speed comes down my way, and I learn a little more about Linux.
