Compile X.org

I wanted to install x.org on my linux system but I don't know what packages I need to install it. I went to http://www.x.org but there were many tarballs there. What are the dependencies and what packages I need to build a minimal X server on my machine.

Unless you really know what you are doing, I would really recommend sticking with your distributions version, though :-)

Then maybe you should ask the LQ mods to move this Q to the Arch forum where someone will surely help you.

Click the "Report" button. Ask nicely, it will happen

And is there some reason you want to install Xorg outside of the Arch packaging system?

Maybe he just doesn't know how to use it (and I don't either!).

Perhaps it would be helpful to post him a link to a Howto.

I remember my first linux distro - Mandrake-something. At first I thought I had to compile everything from source "because that 's the way linux did it". Being pointed at Mandrake's urpmi package manager was a REVELATION!

... And I never looked back. Though I have switched distros

And what do mean Arch packaging system. If you mean what I think then my answer is because I can't connect to Internet within Arch.

Two points:

1] "If you mean what I think", isn't at all helpful. We are not mindreaders, please state what you think, or better, the facts.

2] If you cannot connect to the internet, then you have a more pressing problem than compiling X from source, and you need to solve that first.

I am asking the LQ mods to move this thread to the Arch forum.

Well I linked you to the howto on building modular Xorg. However, if you can download and transfer the source code to this machine running Arch, certainly you can download the Arch Xorg packages and install them, right? You might want to ask the Arch folks about that.

That would be be the big issue; have you researched/asked for help with that?

You should really use some other distros which won't require you to stay connected to internet for installation. Considered Slackware?
