Can't get a working xorg.conf!!!

Okay.. I installed arch on my notebook about a month ago.. someone in #archlinux helped me get the xorg.conf working right.. and I was super happy.. everything worked great... but of course.. Slackware 10.1 came out and I just HAD to try it...

So.. obviously.. I'm back now..

the install was okay.. and I have gotten it installed, and updated and whatnot.. but I cannot get a working xorg.conf for the life of me!!!

Things I have tried:

-hwd -s method, then copy it to xorg.conf
-X -configure
-xorgconfig (using settings that work in EVERY other distro)

No matter what I do.. it gets fatal errors starting X... browsing through the Xorg log I have found that nearly every font path says it doesn't exist or watever.. also.. it says it doesn't recognize my mouse... I'm sure if there are any additional errors..

Specs for reference:

HP Pavilion ze5270 (5200 series)
Pentium 4 2.4GHz (non-HT)
512 MB DDR
40 GB Hitachi HDD
natsemi onboard NIC
ATI Radeon IGP 340M integrated graphics chip (MUST use VESA as IGP chips are not supported by the 'radeon' or 'ati' drivers)
15.1" XGA screen

If anyone has similar specs, post your xorg.conf... otherwise.. any pointers??

If you're getting all those font errors then maybe X didn't install properly. Maybe try running pacman -Scc and reinstall x-server :)

I can't help you with the xorg.conf but maybe boot from Knoppix and just copy XF86Config over, I couldn't get a working xorg.conf either so that's what I had to do, my monitor is cheap crap though so I didn't have a manual with refresh values to work from..

I might try that.. I don't have any values either.. because it's a notebook screen :(

I might try the knoppix way and see what happens...

I got it working perfectly.. I didn't realize that there was a 'synaptic' package.. so I did 'pacman -S synaptics' and it installed the touchpad driver and.. as part of the installation, gave me the chunk of code to stick into xorg.conf... i added that block to an 'X -configure' generated config file.. and it works like a charm... even the scrollbar!! woot!

So.. I was going through all that trouble.. without realizing it was much easier..

Arch is definitely a top-notch distro... and it's not even to version 1.0 yet... With it's i686 optimization and excellent binary packages.. as well as ABS system for compiling from source.. I expect it to blow up like Gentoo did.. or at least I hope so because it's very good :)
