Arch Vs. Frugalware
While doing some Distro research I came upon one named Frugalware. Apparently it uses the pacman package manger like Arch does, and the developer of pacman is in some way involved with the development of Frugalware I think.
Does anyone have experience with both of these Distros? Can anyone help me to understand the ways in which they may be similar, and the ways in which they may differ? |
I don't have experience in Frugalware, but I've heard it's a fork of Arch. It's designed to be simpler and easier to use. It used to be based on Slackware, but I'm not so sure it is anymore. Frugalware's packages are not compatible with Arch's, even though they use the same package manager.
If you're interested, some other advanced distros to check out are: -Crux (the basis of Arch if I'm not mistaken) -Gentoo (More like a BSD style Linux) -Sorcerer/Lunar/Sourcemage (I'm not sure which name is official EDIT: It turns out they're all forks of each other) - Much like Gentoo with a ports system, but apparently easier to set up and install. |
Apparently Frugalware is a bit obscure and a lessor known distro; it is fairly young. It looks very interesting, and well thought out. I think I'll give it a try as soon as I'm able to, along with Arch and Slackware.

Frugalware is NOT forked from Arch, it's forked from Slackware.
Just saying... |
Frugalware is ( /was when i tried it - about 4 years ago) meant to be Slackware lookalike with package manager that handles dependencies. No real similarity with Arch, besides the use of pacman.
It was buggy back then. Quote:
SourceMage is uber-geeky: you have a grimoire of sorts and 'cast spells' instead of compiling packages... Gentoo feels like Ubuntu in comparison. Lunar impressed me greatly, personally. Much more approachable and no-nonsense compared to Gentoo. I read lot of xfce devs use it, but i have no idea if it still applies. |
defintiely forked from Slackware.
I think it is trying to become its own thing, similar to how Arch was inspired by Slackware current but with auto dependency resolution, except Frugal was an actual fork. |
