I hope the initial information above is enough to get some hints from the experts.
My system was working fine. Before all this happened, I would boot into level 3. After that, I would get into a desktop environment through startx. All fine.
Then I upgraded through yaourt -Syu.
After that, this is the system's behavior:
It boots fine into level 3. The console looks fine.
After logging in as usual, if I enter startx, it gives me a black screen. If I try to return to the original command line through ctrl+alt+F1, it does not show anything; it is just the black screen, without any change.
Before the upgrade my /boot/grub/menu.lst did not have the nomodeset option. I added it to the kernel line after encountering the problem I just described, hoping to make it work.
Maybe I should mention that, while this black screen is showing, I am still able to get into this computer through x2go, getting the graphical environment as usual, without a problem, remotely.

i had a nearly same error when i did full system upgrade via pacman -Syu with the xf86-video-nv driver..i deinstalled the xf86-video-nv and installed xf86-video-vesa and then i'm wondering the startx command let me through start up my window manager..i know i dont need a xorg.conf to start X using xf86-video-vesa but i find it useful to have it to make any changes on screen resolution..i dont know exactly how to solve your problem but this is what i did to get my archlinux system working
Thank you for all the comments and suggestions so far.
Apparently the problem seems to be that my video card is very old and the new drivers do not play well with it. It is not a statement from anybody, but just a hypothesis after going through posts on LQ and elsewhere.
So, I started playing with different versions of {drivers, xorg}. However, downgrading surgically some packages while keeping the rest up to date (even with tools such as downgrade) seems to be tricky and time consuming. It's probably doable, but I just don't have the time (this is a production machine).
So, I:
used pacsnap to downgrade the whole system to a previous state, and now everything is working;
put 'xorg' on the IgnoreGroup part of pacman.conf
tried to upgrade again (this time counting on all the xorg programs being ignored); however, I got dependency complaints (so probably there is more packages to ignore on pacman.conf).
For now my system is working. Probably the best course of action will be to buy a new video card.

I don't think so. I haven't see the full logs before it seems, but you have there a Xorg segmentation fault. That's what should be getting you into troubles.

You're right there. I need more coffee.
Now, I have 3 other boxen with exactly the same package versions (including xorg) and they have not given me any trouble.
I don't know why X is trying to load the Mach64 driver for your hardware, since it's an ATi Rage, xf86-video-r128 should do the trick, if not, a fallback to xf86-video-ati will.

Despite reading comments about the Catalyst driver not supporting this old card, I gave it a try, just to test my wiki reading skills
At the end, once installed, it just said "this driver does not support your adapter".
So I guess at this point it should be official: I'll just install a new video card.
Thanks to all for the tips and ideas.
I used to had a problem with my ATI Rage Mobility not being detected properly, I needed to have both mach64 and radeon driver, because if not, the screen was not properly found, now with this file I could uninstall ati-dri and radeon, and it works fine again, still I don't know what to put in "#<Your modules>", I took this example file from arch wiki, mach64 article.
