Hello, I have a Tetra 5041c smartphone from AT&T running MX18 on the desktop computer. I use the phone to do a USB tettering with the computer to access the Internet.

I have noticed that if the phone is connected at bootup time and set to USB tettering MX18 will access it and use it, but once I disconnect the phone and try to reconnect it later it will not see the connection to use as USB Tettering but it does see the phone as a file transfer item.

Now the WiFi part works just like it suppose to but the USB tettering will NOT reconnect unless the whole system is rebooted.

How can I stop this from happening?

I think this has more to do with your network management on the computer than with the phone. I am unfortunately unfamiliar with MX, but with Arch I use netctl to create different networking profiles to use depending on which way I want to connect to a network and/or to the Internet.

For example, when I use my phone as a mobile hot-spot, I stop the service that uses the computer's wi-fi and start the one using the phone through bluetooth.

MX likely has either netctl or an equivalent network manager that would let you switch between connection methods without necessarily restarting the whole system.

MX is a little different than what I've ran over the years but still close enough you can say it appears the same, it doesn't see the connection automatically once USb cable is reconnected like Ubuntu or Mageia does. I've never had to create a profile with them or with MX for that matter they are created automatically. I'm running XFCE desktop with the standard gnome network manager installed by default, pretty much the same as Ubuntu if I'm not mistaken.

Here's what happens at boot, bios is read, usb tettering on phone is activated as soon as system sees phone, usb tettering cuts off a second later but I'm able to cut it right back on (a couple times it cut itself back on as soon as it cut off, (it's not the phone this doesn't happen under Ubuntu (I have 2 versions of it on different drives/systems)), then passphrase is entered to access "/home", system boots to login screen, account is accessed. During the bootup process the usb connection is active and works properly.

When I load up the network manager the usb proflie (active) is there so is the wifi profile (inactive), I can disconnect the usb connection to take the phone outside or away from the system for 1 reason or another but when I reconnect the usb cable the system refuses to activate the connection and I have to switch to wifi then.

I've tried to track down the cause but I'm at a complete loss, it is possible MX18 has a bug in it but when I went to their site to access the forum/help I'm sent here.

are you sure you checked networkmanagers context menus sufficiently? maybe you have to reconnect manually (behaviour I would consider sane)?

if your phone is android, you can also tell it to not present itself as an mtp device to the computer.
the option to change that to charging only should present itself in the notification dropdown when you connect it.

Yes everything has been triple checked, wiped out,rebuilt then rechecked again (I did this as a living before I had to retire, but this is something I have never encountered before).

Android yes (I hate IPhones), the problem isn't the phone because it works properly on other Unix-based system. I don't have to change it from MTP to charging only because all that is handled automatically when I turn on the usb tettering.

I'm pretty sure it's the coding of the MX18 OS that is the problem, I tried out different ways of letting it load from bootup and each time the OS turned off the usb tettering. 1 time I had it running usb tettering AND WiFi hotspot at the same time, those two settings have never ran at the same time before and when the phone is connected to a Ubuntu system the phone would not operate in such a fashion neither would a IPhone (I borrowed one once) nor would that happen with my old phone.

I'm not going to waste much more time on this, I'm going to back up all my info and files and drop MX18 for good.
