Unlock files

Hello All,

I am not skilled with terminal but learning.

Files not intentionally locked have lock symbol.
This happened when they were saved, and I was not aware of doing anything to lock the files.

Where in The MX Manual are instructions to unlock the files? Or, tell me how to do it.

Can I bulk unlock all files in a folder?

Many lock files are--or were--- large video files. The file size is shown as"0".

JOH

I'm not sure what you mean by "locked" files.

What are the permissions on the files in question?

You can determine this by opening a terminal, navigating to the directory that contains the files, and running this command:

Code:
ls -l
Then post the resulting output here, being careful to surround any terminal output with "code" tags which become available when you click the "Advanced" button beneath the compose/edit post window. It makes terminal output much easier to read.

For more information, see man ls.

The foldor or file Icon has a circular image with a lock symbol in it. Using graphical interface I have gone to properties>permissions and changed all option to read/write. I still cannot delete the folder, and other folders will not open.

I will try working with the terminal.
Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the feedback.

My best guess--and it's only a guess at this point--is that user does not have rights to the directory in question.

This is a good tutorial on Linux file permissions: https://www.linux.com/training-tutor...e-permissions/

Thank you Frank: I will study.
The files are in external and internal HDs.

As an aside, it's worth while to become, as we used to say on the railroad, familiar with it, if not necessarily conversant with it.

GUI applications may vary from one desktop environment to another, but the terminal is always the terminal. That's why you will see so many Linux Answers to Linux Questions refer to the terminal.

Happy hunting.
