Mate Desktop, more specifically ... CAJA ... anyone?

Hi.
I've been using the XFCE desktop for the past 6 years, regardless if old or new computer, it just happens to be my favorite desktop because it's so easy to customize. That said, my favorite file manager is CAJA though, which I've always pulled in from the repos. I like pretty much everything about it, most of all the ease of connecting to other computers in our house via ssh and the built-in music preview for audio files, simply by hovering over a file with the mouse cursor (not even a click required).

Anyway, in my latest MX Linux setup from a couple of months ago, the music previews stopped working.

Everything else works fine. Searches, Image Thumbnails, Moving/Copying/Renaming, Bookmarks, etc. And yeah, the audio files play just fine too when you click on them. It's just the audible audio preview that appears to not work anymore. Does anyone have any idea why that might be? Anyone else encounter this? Re-Installing Caja doesn't appear to help .... :(

Wasn't this a feature of the desktop rather than caja? If i remember correctly i had this feature with files on the desktop in gnome a while ago too.

LinWinux 10-19-2020 03:20 AM

No, the built-in audio preview was always part of caja, allowing the user to simply hover over a file in an archive of songs for example, in order to hear the song. As soon as the mouse cursor left the audio title, the music stopped. You couldn't listen to any music for any length of time unless you were willing to keep the cursor on the audio file the entire time. So it was strictly useful as a quick preview, for creating your own large party mixes and things like that. Besides, I've never installed anything else on my XFCE setup for this to work, just the Caja related files ... and the previews always worked ... until very recently anyway.
Caja is actually part of the MATE desktop, and not XFCE.

Hey you, "decades of Linux experience", have you considered doing some troubleshooting to share some info with us?
See the first link in my signature.
Or share the results of your web searches?

Caja plugin maybe? I remember having to install some plugins for Caja, depending on whether the distro I happen to be using had them pre-installed or not.

Wow, seriously? Why so rude ???

I started using Linux full time in 2009 which is certainly not "decades" ago. Before that I worked professionally with Windoze for 18 years, so I'm obviously one of these "non-terminal" Linux users who only resorts to the terminal "as needed" which is pretty much almost never for me. My post was written intentionally in a way that I thought anyone who had experienced this problem would also be able to instantly relate and perhaps offer up their own solution ...

But to answer your question ... A google search didn't yield anything even close to this issue. I couldn't find a complete file list for strictly everything that's needed for CAJA, and I went through Synaptic with a fine tooth comb, to see if I was missing anything relevant, CAJA related, which might have had something to do with hovering preview of audio files.

So, no troubleshooting, no additional information, instead you prefer to go into that discussion again.
Suits me...

Do you even bother to read full sentences?
I told you what troubleshooting I could do, starting with ... "But to answer your question"
Someone should complain about people like you. 15.000+ posts ... Are they all totally irrelevant like your last two comments on this thread ???

Yet (still?) hijacking threads with totally irrelevant dribble in order to pack your stats. If that's not true for this thread, prove me wrong! You've contributed *NOTHING* here! There's nothing rude about calling someone out who is behaving like a jerk, just because they're big on Linuxquestions. You've posted three times on this thread. *ZERO* productive responses, worse than all other responses here. That my friend, is an embarrassment to a forum where people ought to try and be helpful, as opposed to wasting time with your nonsense. If you get up on the wrong side of the bed, just stay away, instead of taking it out on other people.

"You're confusing your own ineptitude with others apparent inability to assist you."

From your signature. Wow, that's downright insulting. I suppose everyone who needs help is just stupid then, right?

Enough bickering. Please stay on topic or do not post.

Even I thought your post was a bit rude. There were many ways to post your question without degrading the OP.

LinWinux 10-22-2020 02:27 AM

Thank you, michaelk.

Without being a terminal guru, I don't really know what else I can do to troubleshoot this issue. I've pulled in a couple of more Caja packages which I didn't think were relevant and that made no difference. Still couldn't find a detailed list of all files which pertain to nothing else aside from strictly Caja. I've always made sure to keep the system updated and I've tried a fresh reboot as well. On top of that I pulled in the remainder of the Caja files, or rather, the entire Mate Desktop into my system (since Caja is the default file manager for Mate), yet still no difference.
I guess there's no solution for this issue then. Bummer ... :(

I use my file manager all day every day. To my knowledge Caja is the only file manager there is, where it's child's play to hear a quick audio preview on individual audio files. Anyone who likes to create large music archives for whatever purpose can benefit greatly with such a preview which required no additional apps to be used whatsoever.

Last but not least ... I've noticed that ksnip (screenshot tool) directly interferes with some of my other apps when they're open on my XFCE setup ... apps simply stop responding without crashing. The instant that I close ksnip, everything is back to normal. Perhaps I'll remove ksnip entirely next to see if that will make a difference? I'll come back and let everyone know.

gstreamer1.0-tools is whats required for this to work: sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-tools

Hope this works for you. It's also possible that preview maybe turned off. In Caja, go edit/preferences/Preview, and check the sound setting.

I gave up posting on this site ages ago, as there are some members who think it is their god given right to talk down to newer and less experienced users.
These users may think they are superior to others, but they only come across as petty ****holes. Speak to, as you would like to be spoken to.
Back to retirement for me.

Good luck WinLinux

michaelk & grevex:
You have to look at OP's posting history to understand my reaction.

Also consider this:

@ondoho
My second post answered someone elses question. My third post explained what I had done, looked for, etc. Which does nocht change the *FACT* that none of your posts proved to be of any help whatsoever. What are you even doing on this forum if all you're willing to do is waste precious time? Many if not most people don't come to a forum as a first resort, but only after web searches haven't provided any results. You obviously can't respect the moderator comments either.

@michaelk
I'm sorry, and I apologize for taking the time to respond.

@grevex
Thanks a bunch, I'll try that next. Removing/Purging ksnip didn't make a difference. I'll be back with results once I check out gstreamer. Thought I had all of that already ... will post with results.
