can't load desktop

i use antix 17 stretch full 32b installed on a microSD.

this problem of desktop not loading is since an apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade last week and also enabling some repos.

image 1: not sure if relevant, but this has always come up when loading the OS on this netbook. i am currently using a live usb antix 17 base 64b (planning to use on other laptop so wiped the original usb) in order to post this question; and it came up on booting with this as well. https://imgur.com/a/99PfLA1(another line to come but wanted to catch it with the camera before it changed)

several images: these are in sequence; booting up and trying to launch X: https://imgur.com/a/V6nCswe

not 100% sure but some in repo manager which were for stretch only.

having problems with "broken packages" which aren't being installed due to missing dependencies (or wrong versions of) which i then can't seem to fix and sending me round the bend.

You're going to have to be more specific.
What broken packages? How have you tried to fix it?
In a terminal, what does inxi -r show?
What does apt-get dist-upgrade show?

I've had micro sd and sd cards fail unexpectedly on file transferring.

Sometimes I get lucky and use Gparted > unmount > Check . If it don't freeze up during the check.
The drive may be OK. Boot up OK. dist-upgrade OK maybe.

SD cards. Micro or otherwise. Have not been real durable lately in my use case-age. My micro sd card on my phone (120 gig ) took a nose dive out of no where.

You might have unmounted the card improperly like I have done in the past and corrupted the file system on it <your micro sd card> . Gparted > Check . Sometimes fixes that.

No mention of make and model of microsd card < Link ? > and what class speed it has also.

do i understand correctly that this is not a fresh install, the problem started "out of nowhere"?

please answer the previous questions in as much detail as possible.

hi,
sorry for the delay. i think i'm just going to re-install because i did some tinkering and have probably ****ed it up beyond repair.
it wasn't out of nowhere, it was after trying to enable repos (actually switching to the NL rather than US ones) and do apt-get update/dist-upgrade. i was trying to get pulseaudio but it had all these unmet dependencies that i couldn't sort out. (was using synaptic package manager).

not been able to get the desktop loaded, firstly saying something wrong with /etc/x11/xorg.config (or whatever it was), then slim. what i tried was loading antix full live usb and copying the sources file over as well as all the slim files that seemed to be missing. after that it still says something wrong with one of the slim files and i'm thinking everything i do makes it a bit worse. it was a nice experiment anyway.

X still won't load up and now now repos found at all. i would persever but every time i fiddle and check it i'm having to reboot and swap the usb's so it gets a bit tiring and i forget what i'm doing.

i think i'm going to replace and install antix base a go from there.

ps this is th memory card https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-1...72.m2749.l2649

and pics in order of how deep in this hole i've dug https://imgur.com/a/HIbwGXY

thanks for your time, sorry to waste it!

in case you decide to not reinstall, we would need this output next:
Code:
sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*
sudo apt update

why don't you just copy-paste the text? what a waste of bandwidth. what a strain on my poor old eyes.

it seems your sources are a complete mess.
from what i can see in those blurry screenshots:
a) sources.list has EVERYTHING commented out - that shouldn't be
b) we never saw what is in sources.list.d, but apt update says there is at least one junk file in it.

if this was debian, i'd say frankendebian.

even so, i can say there's something seriously wrong with your system.
something that you yourself did.

tell us, how did slim get onto your system?

Put it down to experience, we all make mistakes.

I'd do a reinstall, too.

Make a root (/) partition & a /home partition, that way, if you mess up again, you can reinstall the O/S without effecting your files.

Use a notebook & write down what you did when you make changes, that way you can usually reverse out of any problems that occur.

because i can't load the desktop/web browser/or a word processor.

i know it says they are commented out, they weren't previously, that's changed in a day and i can't say why that is. if i go into the files they aren't as far as i can see.

slim- don't know, assume it came with as it's in the live usb.

sorry about your eyes and blurriness, not a good photographer. but thanks for your comments. imma reinstall. i know there's something wrong beyond the hard drive because i always get those errors on booting up with any live usb. the perils of a temper eh.

don't worry i'm not quite daft enough to save important things on a system i'm almost certain to eff up

at least with having to reinstall it cements the whole process of how i set it up etc in my head. know how to make my desktop icons and all

btw i have bought a big linux book to gaze at on the shelf when i'm too busy to read it...

yes, a common problem. with various solutions, if you care to apply your mind to it.
firstly, there's also non-graphical browsers, and they do work wirth LQ.
then:
in shell commands, it is possible to redirect output to a file:
Code:
some command > file
if you still see output with that command, you need to redirect stderr as well:
Code:
some command > file 2>&1
that leaves you with a file, and the second challenge to either upload that directly or access it in a graphical session.
i'm sure you can figure it out.

Not the browser: slim = Simple Login Manager.
