avoiding google

Hi,

I don't know why but I always find myself getting tangled up with google and the other stuff it owns. Passwords and changes get thrust at me and I find it all damned annoying. I still have a Gmail email address that I want to get rid of but, for example, when I wanted to use Thunderbird email I found I had to proffer an existing email address before I could proceed. Google again...

Anyway I hope I haven't been too boring here. I have installed MX Linux 19 on a clean disc and want to be guided on how to populate it without incurring any mess. I would miss YouTube immensely and just hope there is a similar music site to take its place.

So if anyone could help here I would be very grateful.

I'm not sure I understand.
Do you still use your google account as your primary account?
Do you do email through your browser? Which browser?
Where exactly are passwords & changes being thrust at you? Which passwords?

Generally speaking, yes, getting rid of the google account is the biggest & most important step.
Using an addon that blocks all sorts of google services (analytics...).
Choosing a different search engine.
You can still use youtube without a google account.

Kudos on your MX install. The rest. I am clueless. What you call mess. I call organized chaos. So I have no clue on what a mess looks like to you.

All I can say.

I don't know, find another free email.

Yahoo is one.

I've not bothered to search for more, but I'm sure there are some.

Thanks guys. I thought it wouldn't make much sense. I apologise for that. I have nothing in my computer now but MX 19. So I don't have a google primary account at all. But I can call up the Google email address if needed - as when Thunderbird asked for an existing email. But I don't want to and will scrap it asap,

I have tried 'Claws' email already but couldn't make it work for me. I can't tell you why as I have no data stored now. But I'm going to try Yahoo and will report back, hopefully cheerfully.

Use DuckDuckGo for searching and mailbox.org for email (costs a dollar a month).

If you want to get away from Google I recommend Vivaldi.

The Vivaldi free email address is here: https://webmail.vivaldi.net

You can download the free Vivaldi web browser here: https://vivaldi.com/download/

I have used the Vivaldi web browser exclusively for about 4 years and I very much prefer it over the various commercial browsers.

The Vivaldi email service is excellent but I haven't sent change of address notices to people yet. I will if my current email address starts collecting spam.

It sounds as if the first thing you need to do is obtain another email address. Then you can set up an email client to access it.

I think AOL still offers email addresses. A web search for "free email addresses" will turn up a number of articles and reviews of potential providers.

I use the email service offered by my ISP as my primary email address; over the years, I've accessed it with Thunderbird, Claws-mail, Sylpheed, Kmail, Mutt, and others without any problems. It's offered as part of my internet service package (there is also a webmail interface, but I use that quite rarely) and I've found it quite reliable.

That as an alternative to Google is a fine example of "from the frying pan into the fire".

Yep.

I second mailbox.org, or posteo.de.

I use Protonmail for personal emails. It has a very good privacy policy. I used to have a private email address with my ISP but they discontinued the service.

I have a gmail address too but I use it mainly for mailing lists (including from this forum). And I have a Yahoo address as a honeypot for commercial stuff.

I can see this dragging on. I tried getting into Yahoos email system but couldn't get any of a selection of passwords accepted. I gave up in the end.

So I downloaded Vivaldis browser, satisfactorily. I then got a password accepted and now have a new email address. But I then couldn't work out how to actually get into the email system. Eventually I sent my problem via a contact panel to admin of some sort. A stock answer came back saying they would send a reply - by email! Yerss.

I'm now going to try berndbauschs' suggestion of Duck Duck Go and Mailbox org. Assuming they work in the UK I'll be in touch soon.

I may have posted this reply twice - sorry if so.

If you miss Youtube for music, try Spotify.
If you miss it for videos, try dailymotion or vimeo. There are others.

Hi Berndbausch,

Right, I now have duckduckgo attached to Firefox and working. I'm also working on the Freeby at Mailbox.org but it wants to charge me. I've probably filled the form out wrongly because it's 1am here in England and I'm tired.

I suspect that by tomorrow I will have found that the two thingies above will have sorted out my problems. They do seem good.

Many many thanks to all who posted. It is great to be helped so willingly

Cheers, Clearfell
