Problem with Amigo INIT
Hello, I have a problem with Amigo 2.0 on my Dell Latitude XPi P133ST (32mb ram). When I try to run it the "Kill Bill" way, it boots, but when it goes to the init, it responds with a bunch of:
INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty"
Accompanied by 6 of:
INIT: Id "c[1 to 6]" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
It currently has an 800mb hdd with Windows 98SE installed, and Amigo extracted in the linux directory. The file system is FAT32. I have no idea why it won't boot as I followed the directions from amigolinux.org & tried extracting with alzip, zipzag & winrar. I booted from freedos aswell if the killbill method was causing it, but that does the same.
I hope i can get Amigo to go, it's exactly the distro I am after for this old laptop!
Thanks in advance.

This is nearly always an unzip error. Does it boot normally if you use the boot floppy or run linux.bat directly?

Nope, it doesn't work via freedos + running the linux.bat that way either. I'll try decompressing with alzip directly on the machine, as I've been extracting it first on my main pc, then copying the directory to the laptop via samba. Thanks for the quick reply too.

Ah, yes. As stated in the docs, you must unzip the file directly where it will be used unless both partitions are FAT32.

Actually, have run into same exact problem myself.
More info:
- Laptop is Acer/TI Extensa 575CD, 100MHz CPU, 810MB hdd, 40MB ram
- Checked Extensa 575CD's BIOS for any special settings, e.g.,
C/H/S/ geometry
- Partitioned as follows w/ tomsrtrbt fdisk before amigo download
--> /dev/hda1, ext2-83, unformatted, 10MB for future /boot
--> /dev/hda2, Fat16-6, mkdosfs-formatted, set as *active
511MB, 8kb cluster-size
--> /dev/hda3, ext2-83, mke2fs-formatted, 80MB for future /home
--> /dev/hda4, swap-82, mkswap-formatted for 2 x ram swap partition
- Booted from MS-DOS 6.2 floppy, FORMAT /c /s system, scanned C:\drive, and FDISK /MBR's hdd
- Copied Amigo2.ZIP file to C:\ drive, copied full set of Info-Zip UNZIP.EXE to C:\<root>, and UNZIPped Amigo2.ZIP as per instructions (i.e., "unzip the file directly where it will be used)
UNZIP took a LLOONNGG time.
- Made all Amigo config. changes as described in C:\LINUX\README.1ST, including to C:\LINUX\LINUX.BAT and to C:\CONFIG.SYS.
-Re-booted system and got MistaED's exact error.
-------------
INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty"
Accompanied by 6 of:
INIT: Id "c[1 to 6]" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
-------------
(this is exactly what happened for the Extensa, just like for the Dell Latitude XPi P133ST.
- Had to hard-power laptop off to reboot. Re-read C:\LINUX.FAQ.TXT, copied VMLINUZ w/ downloaded bare.i kernel bzImage from ftp site as suggested, replaced VMLINUZ w/ bare.i kernel, and rebooted.
- "Does it boot normally if you use the boot floppy or run linux.bat directly?"
Nope. Same error upon using linux.bat directly, or through rebooting w/ Amigo boot floppy (specified 'mount root=/dev/hda5 rw' as per C:/LINUX/README.1ST)
Are there replacement files one can download from Slackware (e.g., the pkg containing agetty) to get INIT working as it should?

I don't think it's possible to unzip Amigo2.0 with any DOS/16bit utility. You'll have to use the boot floppy and rescue disk and use the linux unzip that's there. At the boot prompt type 'ramdisk' and then insert the rescue floppy when asked to.

Yep, that was the problem in this case for the described laptop: using the correct unzip binary. The DOS UNZIP did not function correctly leading to the INIT issue described here. OTOH the unzip on the Amigo rescue disk worked great leading to a working AmigoLinux on this laptop (no INIT/agetty messages).
This from http://amigolinux.org/docs/inshowto.htm might need to be edited at some point, yes?

How to unzip under DOS: If you are running DOS or WIN 3.1 you'll need to use a 16 bit extractor such as PKZIP to unzip the amigo.zip file. Here's how you'd install on a Zip disk on drive D:\ -- using Windows 3.1 and PKZIP. Start PKZIP and from the "File" menu, select the "Open..." option. In the dialog box, browse for and select the file AMIGO.ZIP. Next, you need to extract the files to a DOS partition. From the "Extract" menu, select the "Extract Files..." choice. In the "Extract" box, make sure the "all files" choice is selected. In the "Extract to:" box, make sure the "Disk" choice is selected. In the text box next to "Disk", you'll need to fill in the path to where you want to extract the files. (They'll be extracted into a \linux subdirectory) For example, if your Zip drive is D:\ and that'swhere you want to install, then you'll want to put D:\ in the box. Otherwise, fill in any DOS drive with enough free space to install. When you've got everything filled in correctly, hit the "Extract" button to extract the files.
