How to play mp3 files

It's easy to play mp3 music files on Amigo Linux.

Configure sound card by editing /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
(or ask the forum if you cant' get it right)

Install from Slack CD1:
installpkg /slackware/ap/rexima-1.2-i386-1.tgz
installpkg /slackware/ap/amp-0.7.6-i386-1.tgz

type command 'rexima' to adjust speaker volumes, and 'amp <name of mp3 file>' to play music.

run command:
chmod 666 /dev/dsp*
chmod 666 /dev/mixer*

This lets you access the sound devices as a regular user.

It only takes 100K space to turn Amigo Linux into a "music box", not bad at all.

If you want advanced sound card support, check out the Amigo HOWTOs Wiki page.

I think your tutorial on ALSA is great. Easy to follow also for newcomers. But ALSA takes some more space on the disk. Don't really know when ALSA is preferred vs. OSS. Anyone? I'm happy when the sound is there at all.

Yes, nice tutorial!
Yours are nice, too, skruf_man.
MORE! MORE! MORE!
But please, if you are sure about your info, make a copy of the tutorial and send it to me before it gets hacked up by someone else. No one like a linux user for 'fixing' something that's absolutely unbroken!
We need to gather about 100 of these minimum, for the Amigo Help Central pages. ONE very good one at a time.

About OSS vs. ALSA - I believe that OSS offers better compatibility with some older cards. The disadvantage to ALSA, aside from disk space, is that the drivers may have to be re-compiled when changing or upgrading the kernel.
I'm trying to address this in several ways in AmigoXP, including compiling in 'set kernel version' for modules. This also allows 'foreign' modules supplied by some hardware manufacturers to work also.

Very glad you guys are working on this, though, as my experience with setting up sound is minimal. But, I need to get auto-sound-configuration working in the HWSETUP routines, so your input is invaluable!
